After being in Lockdown for weeks and weeks, I was invited to play at Lanhydrock Golf Club on Wednesday. Not knowing what to expect apart from the rules of social distancing strictly being adhered to there.. I found the grounds of the Club and Hotel in stunning condition, arriving just 15/20 minutes before the scheduled tee-off time as directed.
The formalities of preparing to play were of these times, short and sweet; given a card outside the pro-shop by Graham Bond, the owner of the Club and asked to give the ground staff right of way on the course.
The view from the first tee, down towards the water and the green beyond was a real sight for eyes sore from weeks of self isolation.. the course looked immaculate.
We did wait for green staff on the third .. for half a minute.. they saw us and cleared the green quickly and were friendly and proud of the work they’d been doing on the course. They had my hearty thanks and congratulations, by the way!
The trees in full bloom, the greens true and the fair weather helped the golf course seem to get better as we played. The ground firmer than when we last played so the ball rolled nicely on the fairways, yet they were lovely and springy to walk on.
The course undulating yet fairly level land in and around the trees, not a course to smash your driver off every tee by any stretch of the imagination.. the beauty of the course matched by the course management needed to navigate it!…….the only real hill a testing dog leg left the 13th.. then, open your shoulders on the 14th for the short par 4 back down and try your luck.. tricky green though..!
What a great course.. some fabulous holes I haven’t mentioned.. I recommend you go and find out for yourselves..though I will say the 18th, a par 5 back up to the clubhouse is a great finishing hole with a big bunker to miss and a big layered green to take on.
Yes, I did have good company for the round, which helps, yet frankly we were both constantly remarking on the excellent condition and the playability of the course between shots to the point of feeling encouraged.
Thank you Mr Bond. 5 STARS
